Tsmakahogh Village Initiative

Photo Project

One of the projects of the Tsmakahogh Village Initiative was to introduce the village to outsiders by means of photography. The project included 41 participants ranging from

7-16 years old. They wanted to express their view of Tsmakahogh through photographs. I asked the youth to think of millions of people who knew nothing about their village. In addition, I asked them to think of the camera as the only tool they had to aid them in telling others about Tsmakahogh.

Each person was allowed to keep the digital camera with her/him for a day to complete the project. This gave the participants the opportunity to get acquainted with a digital camera while using it as a tool of self-expression. The project turned into one of the most popular and successful projects for the youth who waited with great anticipation and excitement for their turn to partake in the project. At the beginning of the project only 10-16 year olds were going to participate. However, towards the end of the project the 7-10 year olds approached me and voiced their desire to participate in the project. They were extremely happy to learn they could participate.
